30-Day Plan for NDA Written
These 30 days are a crucial period where many candidates make numerous mistakes and face a lot of confusion regarding what to study, what not to study, what to practice, and what to avoid practicing. I am here to provide guidance on these matters. When I was in the phase of preparing for the written exam, I also faced many difficulties. For example, there were 30 chapters in Mathematics, and I was unsure about what to study and what to skip. With the help of Centurion Defence Academy, I learned that studying all 30 chapters in 30 days is very challenging. Instead, we can focus more on our areas of strength during this period and perform as much revision as possible.
Role of Mock Tests
In addition to this, many candidates tend to give up during this phase, but we must avoid doing that. This is the critical phase where we need to clear the written exam. In these 30 days, practice plays a very important role. If you don’t practice or take mock tests, you won’t know where you stand. That’s why, at Centurion Defence Academy, there are numerous mock tests—monthly, weekly, and especially in the last 30 days, where almost 15 days are dedicated solely to mock tests. These tests not only help you assess your performance but also provide insight into your areas of improvement.
These mock tests will also show you that this is your strong point and that, for instance, if five questions come up, you should be able to clear all five. Often, candidates are confused and end up studying a little from each chapter, which results in a mixed-up preparation where they might not be able to answer any questions at all. Instead, we need to stay consistent and persistent. Further, to avoid nervousness before the exam, these mock tests help boost our self-confidence and morale.
Now, I would like to explain about the written examination: it basically consists of two papers—Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT).
Mathematics Paper Strategy
In Mathematics, there are 120 questions, and we have 150 minutes to complete them. Given this, solving 120 questions in 150 minutes is not easy. Therefore, it is better to focus on selective content, which is our strong area. We should practice more formula-based questions, which can be solved quickly once the formula is applied. For example, in algebra and probability, if we have practiced extensively and these are our favorite chapters, we can solve them quickly. We can solve three or four questions in just two minutes if we are well-prepared.
Sometimes, there are questions in the paper that are from the chapters we have studied but are very time-consuming. Instead, we can solve the questions that are within our strong areas and take less time. By doing this, we won’t be as stressed about questions we can’t solve or about questions we were able to solve but missed. This approach helps avoid such situations. Further, before taking the exam, we can revise the formulas. For example, in chapters like vectors, direct formula-based questions may appear, such as finding projections.
GAT Paper Strategy
Regarding the General Ability Test (GAT) paper, it is quite broad. In these 30 days, we can take a selective approach. For example, in General Studies (GS), geography usually accounts for about 15 to 20 questions. If we focus on studying geography and also cover the modern portion of history, it is more than enough for the social science portion. As most of us come from a science background, the science section becomes relatively easy, almost like a walkthrough.
English Strategy
Regarding English, we can follow a strategy where, out of the 50 questions, almost 20 to 25 questions are vocabulary-based, such as idioms and phrases, synonyms, and antonyms. If, in these 30 days, we target revising 15 to 20 synonyms and antonyms on a daily basis, it will be very fruitful and beneficial for us. In case something in the exam is stuck in our mind, the first thought often is, ‘Okay, I have read this somewhere.’ Sometimes, we encounter words related to ones we’ve already studied, such as root words. If we have studied certain words and come across a related word, even if we are only partially familiar with it, we can sometimes use our intellect to make an educated guess, and it often works.
Current Affairs Strategy
Further, for current affairs, we can take the approach of focusing on curated content. Over a six-month period, there is a huge amount of content, so Centurion Defence Academy also provides professionally made, shortlisted videos a month before the exam. These videos are designed to help candidates avoid issues with current affairs. We can watch these videos, take notes, and revise them. Current affairs cover a broad range of topics, and generally 6 to 10 questions come from this section. Therefore, spending excessive time on it may not be practical.
Instead, we can focus on attempting around 4 questions from YouTube or similar sources, which should be more than enough. The entire paper, including Paper 1 (Mathematics) and GAT, is worth 900 marks. However, from the past three to four examinations, a score of around 360 is considered a safe score. If your combined score from both papers is around 360, it is more than sufficient to clear the written exam. So, this was my 30-day preparation strategy. If you follow it, it could also be very beneficial for you.
