What are the Nine GTO Tasks in SSB?

Understanding Nine GTO Tasks

In the Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks during the SSB interview, candidates are assessed on their leadership qualities, teamwork, problem-solving ability, decision-making, and physical endurance. The GTO tasks are conducted over two days and consist of nine tasks, which are as follows:

  • Basic Series
    • GD
    • GPE
    • PGT
    • GOR
  • Confirmatory Series
    • HGT
    • LECTT
    • Individual Obstacles
    • Command Task
  • Final Series
    • FGT

Basic Series – The observation of the GTO is focused on the group effectiveness of each candidate.

  1. Group Discussion (GD)

Objective: To assess communication skills, knowledge, confidence, logical thinking, and leadership.

Format:

  •  The GTO gives two topics for discussion.
  •  The first topic is chosen by the group, from two given by the GTO.
  • The second topic (social) is assigned by the GTO.
  •  Each discussion lasts for approximately 15-20 minutes.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Clarity of thoughts.
  • Fluency.
  • Confidence.
  • Logical argumentation.
  • Ability to listen to others.
  1. Group Planning Exercise (GPE)

Objective: To assess problem-solving ability, teamwork, resource utilization, and logical decision-making.

Format:

  • A model with various problems in a social situation (e.g., bridge collapse, fire, medical emergency) is presented.
  • Candidates are given a set time to study (5 min) the problem and write individual solutions (10 min).
  • After that, a group discussion (15-20 min) follows where a group solution is finalised by the group.
  • One candidate is nominated by the group to explain the final plan.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Analytical Thinking.
  • Resource Management.
  • Cooperation.
  • Leadership.
  1. Progressive Group Task (PGT)

  • Objective: To test teamwork, leadership, intelligence, and problem-solving.

Format:

  • The group faces four progressively difficult obstacles (each with structures, planks, ropes, etc.).
  • The task must be completed while following rules (e.g., red areas are out of bounds).

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Cooperation.
  • Creativity.
  • Decision-Making.
  • Adaptability.
  1. Snake Race (Group Obstacle Race)

  • Objective: To test team coordination, cooperation, and competitive spirit.

Format:

  • The group carries a snake-like heavy rope structure through a series of six obstacles.
  • Rules such as holding the snake continuously and following predefined paths apply.
  • It is a competitive task with multiple teams racing simultaneously.

  • Physical Fitness.

Confirmatory Series – The observation of the GTO is on Individual Effectiveness.

  1. Half Group Task (HGT)

  • Objective: Similar to PGT but allows better individual participation.

Format:

  • The group is divided into two smaller subgroups.
  • Each sub-group tackles a single obstacle using the same PGT rules.

Evaluation Criteria: Leadership, effective communication, initiative, and problem-solving.

  1. Lecturette

  • Objective: To test self-confidence, public speaking, and knowledge.

Format:

  • Each candidate is given four topics to choose from.
  • 3 minutes are given to prepare.
  • The candidate must speak for 3 minutes in front of the group.

Evaluation Criteria: Clarity, structure, confidence, and ability to engage the audience.

  1. Individual Obstacles

  • Objective: To test physical endurance, confidence, and risk-taking ability.

Format:

  • There are 10 obstacles, each assigned a specific point value (1-10).
  • The candidate has 3 minutes to complete as many as possible.
  • Obstacles number represent the marks candidates get:

  1. Command Task

  • Objective: To assess leadership, command skills, and decision-making.

Format:

  • Each candidate acts as a leader and selects two subordinates.
  • The leader must solve an obstacle using the given resources (planks, ropes, etc.).
  • The GTO may increase the difficulty level by imposing restrictions.

Evaluation Criteria: Commanding ability, quick thinking, and problem-solving under pressure.

Final Series – The GTO finalises his assessment by combining all bits and pieces of information to arrive at the overall personality of each candidate.

  1. Final Group Task (FGT)

  • Objective: To reassess leadership, cooperation, and problem-solving.

Format:

  • A single group task similar to PGT but slightly easier.
  • Conducted after all individual assessments to observe final group dynamics.

Evaluation Criteria: Teamwork, leadership, patience, and perseverance.
