From Psychology to GTO: Inside Centurion’s 2-Day SSB Boot Camp

Dust on the running shoes, nervous introductions, challenging group tasks, psychological testing, and plenty of lessons about teamwork. That is what the 2-day SSB Boot Camp at Centurion Defence Academy’s Lucknow Centre looked like from the ground.

For most defence aspirants, SSB preparation begins with books, videos, mock interviews, and discussions about Psychology, GTO, Screening, and the Personal Interview. But there is a difference between knowing how SSB works and actually experiencing it.

What happens when you have to work with people you have never met? How do you respond when you have to speak in front of a group? What happens when your first GTO plan does not work? And how confidently can you discuss your own profile during an interview?

The 2-Day SSB Boot Camp 2026 at Centurion Defence Academy, Lucknow, was designed around these practical questions. Across two days, aspirants experienced Screening, Psychology, GTO, Personal Interview, PIQ review, Profile Mapping, CPSS exposure, and mentor interaction.

The aim was not to turn candidates into officers in 48 hours. It was to help them understand the SSB process, experience important activities, and identify areas they need to work on before facing the actual board.

For those who missed Lucknow, the next edition is scheduled at Centurion Defence Academy’s Dehradun Centre on 3rd and 4th October 2026.

The Morning Huddle: When Preparation Meets Reality

Almost every defence aspirant has imagined wearing the uniform.

You have watched passing-out parade videos, followed officers’ journeys, and perhaps pictured yourself marching on the parade ground after hearing the word “Recommended.”

Then you step into an SSB boot camp.

Suddenly, preparation becomes practical.

You are surrounded by aspirants with the same objective. Some are naturally confident, some are nervous, while others take time to become comfortable in a new group.

There is no pause button or second take. You have to listen, communicate, participate, and respond when required.

The Lucknow boot camp created an environment where candidates could experience these situations instead of simply reading about them.

SSB preparation is not about becoming someone else. It is about understanding yourself better and presenting your personality naturally.

Day 1: Understanding the SSB Process

The first day focused on building a strong foundation.

For a first-time candidate, SSB can seem complicated, with terms such as OIR, PP&DT, TAT, WAT, SRT, GTO, PIQ, and Conference.

The boot camp brought these components together and helped candidates understand the broader selection process and the Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) associated with it.

Sessions on Screening, Psychology, and Personal Interview gave aspirants a clearer picture of what each stage involves and how they connect with one another.

मनसा वाचा कर्मणा: Thought, Speech and Action

One phrase that stood out during the classroom sessions was “मनसा वाचा कर्मणा.”

In simple terms, it refers to thought, speech, and action.

  • Mansa — Thought: How do you approach situations during psychological testing?
  • Vacha — Speech: How do you communicate during an interview, narration, group discussion, or lecturette?
  • Karmana — Action: How do you behave when working with a group during outdoor tasks?

These different activities allow candidates to observe different aspects of their behaviour.

You may be confident while preparing answers alone but hesitate when speaking spontaneously. You may communicate well individually but struggle in a group. Or you may have good physical ability but need to improve your planning and communication.

Practical exposure helps bring these areas to the surface.

Psychology: Understanding Instead of Memorising

Psychology is one of the most discussed areas of SSB preparation.

Aspirants often search for the “right” answers for TAT, WAT and SRT. The Psychology Orientation and Masterclass at the boot camp focused instead on understanding the fundamentals and approaching the tests with the right mindset.

The idea is simple: preparation should help you understand the assessment rather than turn your responses into memorised scripts.

Candidates were encouraged to understand the nature of psychological tests, practise under realistic conditions and become comfortable responding within the available time.

Your PIQ Is Your Own Story

The Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ) may look like a simple form, but the information you provide can become important during the Personal Interview.

Your education, family background, hobbies, achievements, responsibilities, and interests can all become areas of discussion.

That is why the boot camp included PIQ Form Review and Profile Mapping.

The basic rule is straightforward:

If you have written it, know it.

If reading is your hobby, be prepared to discuss what you read. If you mention an achievement, remember what you actually did to earn it. Your PIQ should represent your real profile rather than an idealised version created for the interview.

CPSS Lab Exposure for Flying Branch Aspirants

For Air Force Flying Branch aspirants, Day 1 also included two hours of CPSS Lab Exposure.

Led by Lt. Kaveesh Gaindhar, Ex-OTA & Territorial Army, the session introduced candidates to the Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) and the abilities involved in it.

For aspirants who have only heard about CPSS through preparation material or online discussions, such exposure can make the process more familiar and help them understand what they may eventually face.

Day 2: From Theory to the GTO Ground

If Day 1 was about understanding the process, Day 2 took the candidates outdoors.

The morning included reporting, warm-up activities, and a GTO briefing before candidates moved into practical tasks.

Terms such as GD, GPE, PGT, HGT, Lecturette, and Command Task moved from preparation notes to actual activities.

The outdoor environment brings a different kind of pressure. You have to think while moving, communicate while working with others, and adjust when your first plan does not work.

GTO Is Not Just About Physical Strength

A candidate can be physically strong and still struggle in a group task.

GTO activities require more than fitness. Candidates need to understand the problem, contribute ideas, cooperate with others, and remain involved.

The loudest person is not necessarily the most effective participant.

Sometimes leadership means suggesting a practical solution. Sometimes it means listening to another candidate. Sometimes it means helping a teammate. And sometimes it means remaining calm when the first plan fails.

The wooden structures, ropes, planks, and obstacles at the boot camp gave candidates an opportunity to experience this firsthand.

The High Beam: One Step at a Time

The obstacle activities brought another dimension to the experience.

Balancing across elevated wooden structures may look easy from the ground. Once you are actually on the obstacle, the experience changes.

You have to control your movement, maintain balance, and stay focused.

These activities can also reveal how candidates respond to unfamiliar situations.

Do you rush? Do you panic? Do you ask for help? Do you encourage others? Can you continue when something does not go according to plan?

There may not be an immediate answer to these questions, but experiencing such situations can make candidates more aware of their own behaviour.

From Strangers to a Team

By the end of Day 2, the atmosphere had changed.

Candidates who arrived as strangers had spent two days solving problems, participating in activities, interacting with mentors, and encouraging one another.

The final group photographs captured that transformation.

But the real takeaway was confidence — not the confidence of someone who believes they have mastered SSB, but the confidence that comes from discovering what they can handle outside their comfort zone.

A two-day boot camp cannot turn someone into a commissioned officer, nor can it guarantee a recommendation.

What it can provide is a reality check.

You may discover that you hesitate before speaking. You may realise that your physical confidence needs work. You may find that you have good ideas but struggle to communicate them. Or you may discover that you naturally support your group under pressure.

Whatever you discover, you now have something specific to work on.

Learning From Experienced Mentors

The boot camp also included interactive mentor sessions, PIQ review, Profile Mapping, and an SSB Q&A.

The mentor panel included experienced professionals such as Psychologist Shishir Dixit Sir, Lt. Col Aditya Budhiraja (Retd.), and Lt. Kaveesh Gaindhar.

For aspirants, these interactions provided an opportunity to discuss practical doubts related to Psychology, GTO, Interview, and overall SSB preparation.

Every participant also received a complimentary copy of “Ranneeti – SSB Interview Guide,” personally signed by author Shishir Dixit, featuring OIR questions, SSB tips, GPE and GT examples, Psychology practice material, CPSS guidance, and resources for repeaters.

2-Day. One Important Reality Check.

There is no shortage of SSB preparation material today. You can watch interview videos, read Psychology books, and practise GTO concepts from home.

But eventually, preparation has to move from the screen to the ground.

You have to speak when you are nervous.

You have to contribute when several people are talking.

You have to solve a problem when your first idea does not work.

You have to answer questions about your own life.

And sometimes, you simply have to step onto a high beam, steady yourself, and take the next step.

That is where preparation becomes real.

The 2-Day SSB Boot Camp does not promise a recommendation. It allows aspirants to understand the process, experience key activities, and identify areas for improvement before facing the actual SSB.

Because when you finally walk into the SSB centre, the process should not feel completely unfamiliar.

You should know what awaits you—and have a better idea of how you respond when it does.

DON’T JUST PREPARE FOR SSB. EXPERIENCE IT.
