A Soldier’s Son to a Future Naval Officer

“Army officers are not those who never make mistakes, but those who learn from them and never repeat them.” These words stuck with Utkarsh, a dedicated and hard-working boy from Azamgarh. Hailing from a defence background and having grown up in a village, his journey to the NDA was not so simple. He had failures, struggled with self-doubt, but never gave up. With consistent effort and a defined goal, he made it to the NDA, which saw him get an All India Rank of 257 in course 154. His story is of determination, learning, and not giving up.

Early Life – Lessons from the Village and the City

Utkarsh hails from a humble background with a military background. His father is in the Army, and therefore he grew up witnessing both the hardships as well as the respect associated with such a life. Although he studied in Lucknow, the bulk of his time was spent in the village of Azamgarh. It was in the village that he learned life’s true lessons in humility, in strong connections with people, and in discipline.

In school, Utkarsh scored very well – 94% in Class 10 and 92% in Class 12. But he always knew he wanted more than just marks. He wanted a career that had purpose. And that’s when he set his heart on joining the armed forces.

Twists in the Tale: From Army Dream to Navy Path

Initially aspiring to join the Indian Army, a clerical error in the preference form led him to the Navy SSB. But Utkarsh embraced it wholeheartedly. After getting conferenced out in a previous attempt, especially as a repeater, he found himself battling doubt. But a peer’s powerful line changed his mindset and helped him bounce back stronger.

The Role of Family: A Shared Dream

Throughout the journey, his father was the biggest support to him. When the time for Utkarsh’s recommendation came around, his father was at the SSB center. The results were yet to be announced, but that moment for Utkarsh was already here in the affirmative. “My son will be an officer” he said with pride. That which was a victory for Utkarsh was also his father’s.

Cracking the NDA Written: Focused and Strategic

Utkarsh took the NDA written exam three times. The first time, he wasn’t well-prepared. The second time, he did better but missed out on the SSB. By his third try, he had a clear plan.

He had targeted 400+ marks to be on the safer side in the merit list, and he attained 429.

His strategy was simple:

Use YouTube for tricky topics

Practice PYQs regularly

Use highlights and screenshots for quick revision

For GAT, focus on strong areas like English and Science

He didn’t waste time on lengthy notes. He revised smartly, focusing only on what mattered.

SSB Preparation: Personality Over Perfection

Utkarsh prepared at Centurion Defence Academy, where his instructors, such as Shishir Sir and Buddhi Raja Sir, assisted him in enhancing the way he responded to questions, structuring his stories better, and making his psychological exams more authentic and sincere. Preparing for the SSB with him was not a matter of going down a checklist; fit was about discovering who he actually was and displaying that with confidence. In the GTO exercises, he performed calmly under pressure and brought ideas that led his team through complex problems.

Leadership in Action: Standing Out as a Repeater

Even though most of his group had freshers, Utkarsh got a chance to lead during tasks like PGT and HGT. He gave logical solutions, helped his group when they got stuck, and remained calm under pressure. When the GTO made the task harder by removing resources, Utkarsh took it as a positive sign, maybe the GTO saw potential in him.

Overcoming Communication Hurdles

Though he studied in an English-medium CBSE school, fluency didn’t come easily. Regular English practice during SSB prep helped, along with clever communication tricks – like inserting a Hindi word in GTs to reset attention. His advice: clarity and confidence matter more than speaking perfect English.

Facing the Conference Room

Conference day was tense. Utkarsh waited only 3-4 minutes, usually a sign of a borderline case. Inside, he was asked about his performance. He admitted that his second GD didn’t go well and that he only attempted 40 SRTs. He even fumbled on a basic average-speed question, but composed himself and answered the next questions confidently.

Despite the self-doubt, he was the only repeater in his group who got recommended. His honesty, confidence, and growth mindset worked in his favour.

Medicals in Vizag: A Learning Curve

In Visakhapatnam, his medical took place, which is also where he spent time exploring the city with his father. Though there were delays and dietary issues, he remained focused. He also mentored juniors during this time, many of whom later got recommended, highlighting his natural leadership.

Advice for Aspirants: Build Your Base Early

Utkarsh has a few key lessons for NDA aspirants:

Start early: Build strong academics and communication from Class 9–10.

Focus on revision: Use PYQs and keep things simple.

Practice regularly: Especially for Maths and English.

Work on yourself: SSB is not about tricks; it’s about personality.

Be honest: In interviews and in your preparation.

Final Thoughts – Becoming an Officer in Mind First

Utkarsh says that clearing NDA is not just about marks or tricks, it’s about becoming an officer in your thinking. It’s about taking responsibility, being aware of your strengths and weaknesses, and never giving up.

He started with the dream of wearing a uniform like his father’s, and now, he is all set to wear one of his own.

“Jab tak khud par bharosa nahi hoga, tab tak koi aur bhi bharosa nahi karega.”

That’s the line he now lives by and the message he shares with every aspirant out there.
