First Term NDA cadet dies during swimming practice session

An 18-year-old first-term cadet at the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, Pune, lost his life during a swimming practice session on Thursday afternoon. The incident has sent shockwaves across the academy, which is known for its rigorous and disciplined training routine.

Cadet Identified as Aditya D. Yadav

NDA authorities have identified the deceased as Cadet Aditya D. Yadav (18), a first-term trainee. According to an official release issued by the NDA through the Defence PRO, Pune, the incident occurred around 5 pm on October 23 during an organised swimming session for weak swimmers.

“During the training session, cadets were swimming across the width of the pool when Cadet Aditya D. Yadav was found motionless on the surface of the water. Observing this, two lifeguards immediately dived in and pulled him out,” the statement read.

Immediate Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and medical assistance were provided on the spot. The cadet was then rushed to the Military Hospital, Khadakwasla, but despite all possible efforts, he could not be revived, officials confirmed.

NDA Extends Condolences, Inquiry Ordered

The official statement from the academy expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident.

“The National Defence Academy extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family. The civil police and next of kin have been informed. A formal inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the exact cause of the accident,” the release stated.

A senior officer from Pune City Police confirmed that the NDA authorities have informed them and that a probe will be conducted to investigate the circumstances leading to the cadet’s death.

Second Tragedy in Two Weeks

This tragic occurrence follows an earlier loss of an NDA cadet in a suspected case of suicide, which took place merely two weeks ago.

The earlier incident occurred on October 10, when Cadet Antriksh Kumar Singh (18), also in his first term and a member of Charlie Squadron, was discovered dead in his room at the hostel early that morning. He was from Uttar Pradesh and had joined the academy in July.

The two back-to-back incidents have left the NDA fraternity in grief and disbelief, as such occurrences are rare within the academy’s closely monitored and structured environment.

Swimming Training at NDA

Swimming training is part of compulsory physical and military training at the National Defence Academy. Every cadet, whether with or without previous experience, has to undergo swimming and water survival classes under strict instructor supervision.

The sad loss of Cadet Aditya D. Yadav again brought to focus the demanding physical rigours and hardships of NDA life, where young trainees are groomed to be the officers of the Indian Armed Forces of the future.

Condolences and Support

After the event, the NDA contacted the cadet’s family and offered full support during this incredibly difficult period. A condolence ceremony is going to be held on campus to remember the deceased cadet.

The NDA and Pune Police together have initiated a joint investigation to find out if there were any procedural lapses and, if required, to suggest better safety steps.
