From School Desks to Dream of Joining the Indian Navy: Om Bhatnagar’s Inspiring NDA Success Story

In a world where balancing school and professional dreams can seem too daunting. Om Bhatnagar, a high-spirited class 12^th student from Stella Maris School in Lucknow, has shown that with unrelenting persistence, the right guidance, and a clear-cut plan of action, dreams can very well turn into reality. At his first attempt itself, Om had a recommendation for the NDA 154^th course, an achievement that many set their sights on but few attain. The Spark behind the Dream

Every success story begins with a dream. For Om, the seeds of joining the Indian armed forces were sown early. There was always a pull towards the Indian Navy – a life of adventure and service excited me like nothing else

Despite coming from humble beginnings, Om’s ambitions were anything but small. What kept his fire alive was the emotional support of his family and encouragement from his friends. He says ‘The strength to handle pressure comes from within. If you want to achieve something big, you must learn to handle pressure.’

The Challenge: Balancing Boards and NDA

Being in class 12, Om was already subjected to tremendous academic pressure. He established a well-rehearsed routine that merged school studies with practice specific to nda.

The day was strategically divided – board studies in the morning, NDA’s GAT and Maths in the afternoon, and personality plus communication skills in the evening. Sundays were spent on mock interviews and reading defence-related books. During the summer break, he dedicated full days from 9 AM onwards to focused preparation, prioritizing GAT, and planning Maths and Science chapters based on weightage and previous year questions.

His tips to fellow students?

Don’t differentiate between NDA and boards. Prepare intelligently –maths is common, and current affairs assist in both!

Managing Social Life and Peer Pressure

Whereas most students get sidetracked by tuition, phones, and outings, Om opted for discipline without seclusion. Remained in contact with friends during evening time and still saved time for studies at the same time. – He states.

He urges students who are not from a science background to emphasize concepts rather than mugging up. Students of commerce and humanities can also clear nda exam by keeping concepts clear.

Maths, GAT, and SSB – The Strategy

Om prepares for maths every day. He focused on high-weightage chapters and made PYQ his priority. One hour daily spent doing important maths questions according to their importance.

For GAT, his strategy was balanced. Grammar, vocabulary, and Hindi-English translation practice will help students to master the English section in GAT. His GAT tips- read the Newspaper, revise the NCERT, and do quick GD quizzes.

He emphasised significant chapters since particularly PYQ, to pinpoint major topics. In History-Modern History was emphasized. In Geography, he made conceptual clarity prominent in Geomorphology, Climatology, and Indian geography.

Centurion Defence Academy – The Game Changer

Om credits Centurion Defence Academy and Chief Defence Exam Mentor Shishir Sir with much of his success. Centurion provided me with discipline. “They didn’t spoon-feed responses — they transformed me into someone who responds rightly by nature,” he adds.

He was introduced to Centurion by his cousin Yash Srivastava [previous Centurion student], who said- If your aspiration is to be in the armed forces, this is the place to be.

At Centurion, Om was given a mock interview, psychological session, and GTO ground training. Shishir Sir’s book Ranniti was his guidebook. It helped me know the thinking of assessor and how to build OLQs. It was like taking the actual exam before the actual exam.

The SSB Experience – A Test of Character

Om had taken 21 21-day leaves from school and persuaded his teachers to let him prepare for SSB on a full-time basis. That paid off-

Om says – SSB isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being original and honest.

I the screening test, he paid attention to story structure and transparent narration. In group discussion, he worked on listening, speaking with reasoning, and not being aggressive.

On psychological exams [TAT, SRT, and WAT], on remained true to himself. I answered as I would in life. Evaluators want the genuine you. – He says.

His answers were very close to the Ranneeti Book examples, confirming his readiness

GD questions were on economic, security, and climate issues worldwide, and how freebies politicize.

In GTO exercises such as HGT and PGT, pre-physical and strategic coaching at Centurion facilitated it.

His interview, conducted by the Deputy President, included:

• Questions about Vishakhapatnam and tourist spots
• Technicalities about submarines
• Favourite subject: Maths
• Questions from PIQ and family lineage
• Role at home: cooking and helping mother
• Hypothetical: If made SSB Board President for a day, whom would you recommend?

Presence of mind, voice modulation, and newspaper reading helped him handle it all.

On conference day, which lasted 2 minutes, he was asked:

• How would you rate your performance?
• How many friends did you make?
• Your best moment at the centre?

“The moment my chest number was called, everything froze. Then it hit me – I had made it,” he smiles.

Om says, “The Armed Forces don’t just select you – they choose those who are ready to lead and sacrifice.” His message is clear: Start early, seek good mentorship, and stay disciplined.

He urges aspirants to:

• Give more time to Maths
• Revise regularly
• Read newspapers
• Focus on key topics
• Stay positive
• Understand deeply why you want to join the forces

Family’s Reaction and the Road Ahead

Om’s parents, teachers, and friends were proud and emotional. “My parents had tears in their eyes. They believed in me, even when others doubted,” he recalls.

His dream is to serve honourably in the Indian Navy, rise through the ranks, and one day mentor future NDA aspirants.
