From Civilian to IAF Journey! Nishant Maurya NDA 154-Success Story

A Farmer’s Son to an Indian Air Force Warrior

“Shabash mere ziddi Sher!” These were the praises of an Elated Father when his son, Nishant Maurya, at last fulfilled his aspiration – recommendation from 3 AFSB Gandhinagar for NDA 154 and clearing CPSS for the flying branch in his 3rd attempt. But his was no cakewalk. It was a passage of rejection, self-doubt, hard work, and finally – victory.

The Beginning: A Dream Takes Flight

Born into a farming family in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Nishant was brought up amidst surroundings where dreams were secondary to the day-to-day struggles for existence. But he did dare to dream. In Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Amethi, where he studied, Nishant heard about the NDA- National Defence Academy – for the first time and felt an instant spark.

When he told his parents about his aspiration to join the Indian Armed Forces, they were emotional and surprised yet supportive. ‘If my son wants to serve the nation, then I’ll stand with him,’ said his Father. Their village, where most youngsters follow the conventional path, has never seen someone take a leap towards the armed forces. But Nishant was determined to become an inspiration for others.

First Attempts and Early Lessons

Nishant’s NDA journey was not a smooth ride. He had setbacks. He was screened out in his first attempt and conference out in NDA 153. But he never quit. ‘Each failure taught me something,’ Nishant affirms. He joined Centurion Defence Academy in his Second attempt, where he started refining his preparation under the expert mentorship of Chief Defence Exam Mentor Shishir Dixit Sir.

Shishir sir believed in him even before he did. ‘You are going to be recommended next time. Just give your best’ he had said. That belief lit a fire in Nishant.

He started preparing more rigorously, utilizing Centurion’s renowned Ranneeti book, which improved his story writing and overall knowledge of SSB psychology tests. Nishant tells us – Ranneeti book changed the way I looked at preparation. It gave structure to my chaos.

Cracking the Written Exam: Strategy and Discipline

Nishant managed to crack the NDA written exam three times! His key to success? Relentless practice and self-made strategy.

He recalls, “I targeted 100+ questions in Maths. The paper isn’t just about clearing cut-off—it’s about securing a good rank. So I practiced tough-level questions in advance to build confidence.

He balanced board exams and NDA prep by completing most of the syllabus in Class 11, keeping Class 12 free for intense GAT and Maths practice. “Keep GAT and Maths preparation parallel, and never underestimate the paper’s pattern or cut-off trends.”

Communication Skills: The Silent Weapon

Coming from a small village, English communication was initially a barrier. But Nishant worked on it daily. He helped at his father’s shop, spoke to customers, and made social communication a part of his life.

“Your behaviour and communication reflect your personality at the SSB. Make it authentic and natural.”

Nishant believes that developing communication skills is as important as preparing for the written exam. It builds the confidence needed in the Personal Interview and GTO tasks.

The SSB Experience: From Nerves to Confidence

Nishant’s third SSB was different. He was self-assured. He knew his PIQ form like the back of his hand. His psychology tests were easy, and being a repeater, he had the experience factor working for him.

In the GTO, even though his execution of plans in tasks wasn’t flawless, his team collaboration and contribution of ideas were remarkable. His consistent performance left an impression. And in the last interview, he was calm and prepared. He declares ‘Know your family profession, know the work you do. Nda seeks officers who know and respect their origins.’

Clearing CPSS and Medicals: The Final Frontier

Nishant’s recommendation came with another victory—clearing CPSS (Computerized Pilot Selection System) for the Flying Branch. It was a dream comes true.

His medical tests included:

  • Pathology tests
  • X-Ray
  • Ultrasound
  • ENT check-up
  • Eye and ear tests
  • BMI and height-leg length ratio

He cleared all of them successfully.

The Moment of Joy: Family’s Reaction

When the news of his recommendation reached home, his father hugged him and said with teary eyes, “Shabash mere ziddi Sher.” His mother couldn’t stop crying. Villagers came to congratulate him. Many parents said, “Ab hamara beta bhi Fauj main jayega!”

Nishant had not only achieved his own dream—he had ignited a new hope in his entire village.
