Day 1: Screening Test

The first day of SSB is the screening stage. It determines whether a candidate will proceed to the remaining stages of the selection process.

The screening process primarily includes:

1. Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR)

The OIR test assesses a candidate’s verbal and non-verbal reasoning, logical thinking, observation, and problem-solving ability.

Candidates need speed as well as accuracy because the test is conducted under time constraints.

2. Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PP&DT)

In PP&DT, candidates are shown a picture and asked to perceive and interpret the situation. They then write a story based on their perception and participate in a group discussion.

This stage evaluates several important qualities, including:

• Observation and imagination
• Expression of ideas
• Communication skills
• Confidence
• Listening ability
• Group behaviour
• Ability to influence and cooperate
• Logical presentation of thoughts

Day 2: Psychology Tests

Candidates who clear the screening stage proceed to psychological assessment.

The psychology tests are designed to understand a candidate’s thought process, personality, emotional responses, and approach towards different situations.

The major tests include:

Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)

Candidates are shown a series of pictures and asked to write stories based on them. The test helps assess the candidate’s imagination, perception, thought process, and approach towards situations.

Word Association Test (WAT)

In WAT, candidates are shown a series of words and asked to write the first meaningful thought or sentence that comes to mind.

It helps assess the candidate’s natural thought process and mental orientation.

Situation Reaction Test (SRT)

Candidates are presented with various real-life situations and are required to respond to them within a limited time.

SRT evaluates practical thinking, decision-making, responsibility, initiative, and the ability to handle challenging situations.

Self Description Test (SDT)

Candidates are required to describe themselves from different perspectives, such as how their parents, teachers, friends, and themselves perceive their personality.

The test helps assess self-awareness and the candidate’s understanding of their strengths and areas for improvement.

The Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ) is an important part of the SSB process because it contains information about the candidate’s background, education, achievements, interests, family, responsibilities, and other personal details.

Many questions during the Personal Interview can be connected to information mentioned in the PIQ.

Therefore, candidates must understand what they write and be prepared to discuss their experiences confidently.

Day 5: Conference

The final stage of the SSB process is the Conference.

During the conference, the assessors discuss the candidate’s overall performance across the different stages of SSB.

The performance of the candidate in screening, psychology, GTO activities, and personal interview is considered before the final recommendation is made.

The conference is therefore the culmination of the complete SSB assessment process.

Candidates who are recommended subsequently undergo the required medical examination. Final selection is subject to factors such as merit, medical fitness, vacancies, and the applicable recruitment rules.
