Cracked the written exam for NDA, CDS, or AFCAT? Great job, you’ve crossed one of the toughest steps. But now comes the real challenge: the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview.

The SSB or AFSB, if you are going for the Air Force, NSB for the Navy, is not just about how much you know. It is about how you think, lead, and hold up under pressure. They’ll look at your personality, teamwork, and stamina.

Here’s the catch: even a top-notch candidate can be sent home on day one for forgetting a single important document. Yep, it happens more often than you think.

Why Your Documents Are as Important as Your Performance

Think of your documents as the entry ticket to the SSB process. They serve five key purposes:

  • Verify Your Eligibility: Proof of your age, education, and identity.
  • Official Record-Keeping: Your details are noted down for the selection board and other official records.
  • Special Recognition: NCC, sports, or other activity certificates can help show your skills and achievements.
  • Safety & Legal Cover: Risk certificates protect both you and the board if any accident happens during the physical tests.
  • Allowances & Reimbursements: You’ll need to show proof, like tickets, to claim your Travel Allowance (TA).

Document Checklist – NDA SSB, CDS SSB & AFSB 2025

It’s best to arrange your papers into three sections:

  1. Mandatory Documents (must-haves for everyone)
  2. Additional Documents (only for specific cases)
  3. Personal Essentials (not documents, but you’ll need them for your stay)

And, also present the original documents, at least 2-3 certified copies of each. Get it signed and stamped by a Class I Gazetted Officer or the office that issued the document.

Mandatory Documents (For All Candidates)

1. SSB Call-Up Letter / Admit Card

2. Proof of Identity with Photograph

Any one of these works:

  • Aadhaar Card
  • Voter ID
  • PAN Card
  • Driving License
  • Passport
  • UPSC Admit Card (with your photo)

For NDA and 10+2 TES candidates, a photo ID certificate from your school/college principal is fine.

3. Educational Certificates & Mark Sheets

You must have:

  • 10th Class Certificate & Mark Sheet: Acts as your date-of-birth proof.
  • 12th Class Certificate & Mark Sheet: For NDA/TES candidates, this is essential.
  • Graduation Degree & Mark Sheets (all semesters): For CDS/AFCAT entries. A provisional degree is fine if the final one isn’t issued yet.

Important: Copies are not sufficient. They require the originals.

4. Passport-Size Photographs

  • 20 recent colour passport-size photos.
  • White background, white shirt.
  • Avoid glossy prints; matte finish is okay.

5. Risk Certificate

  • It’s a statement declares you (and your parents or guardian, if you’re under 18) know about the risks involved in the physical activities at SSB.
  • Usually, the format is included in your call letter.
  • Mandatory for NDA and TES candidates.

6. No-Claim Certificate

Similar to the language of the risk certificate, which in this case states that no compensation is available for injury which occurs during the selection process.

Additional Documents (If Applicable)

These aren’t for everyone, but if they apply to you, they can be game-changers.

1. Final Year / Result Awaited Candidates

  • A certificate from your college principal stating that you are in the final year, and which also notes the expected result date.
  • If you have issued the original certificates to another party, then present attested copies along with a valid certificate.

2. NCC ‘C’ Certificate

  • Original and +1 copy if applying under NCC special entry, or if it is for an additional achievement.
  • Valid for Army, Navy, and Air Force wings.

3. Sports & Extracurricular Certificates

  • Certified records of achievements in sports, NCC, or cultural activities.
  • Issued by a recognised authority.

4. Character Certificate

  • The character certificate should be issued by your school/college principal or a government official.
  • Should be less than 6 months old.

5. Medical Fitness Certificate

  • Issued by a government-authorised doctor.
  • Not always a must, but it is useful in particular if recent health protocols require it.

6. Previous Candidature Certificate

  • For repeaters, confirm the details of your earlier SSB attempts.

7. Travelling Allowance (TA) Form

  • Filled out in advance for travel reimbursement.
  • Carry original tickets as proof.

8. PIQ Form

Personal Information Questionnaire.

Often sent with your call letter; get it filled out before you arrive.

Personal Essentials (Not Documents, But Don’t Forget!)

These don’t go through the eligibility process, but without them your stay will be uncomfortable.

  • Formal attire: Dark trousers, light shirt, tie (optional), shoes.
  • Sports wear: White shorts/T-shirt, track suit, sports shoes, white socks.
  • Winter wear (seasonal).
  • Writing materials: Pens, pencils, paper, etc.
  • Toiletries, lock & key.
  • Change of address form if needed (Appendix ‘E’ format).

Variations by Entry Type

While the majority of the documents are the same, there are some that differences:

  • NDA / 10+2 TES: Risk certificate, and also bring your school-issued photo ID.
  • CDS / AFCAT: A degree at graduation level (or provisional) is key.
  • AFSB (Air Force): May request for additional medical reports for the flying wing.
  • Navy (NSB): Technical degrees may require additional course completion certificates.

Packing & Preparation Tips

  • Arrive Early: Document verification happens at the starting; being late adds unnecessary stress.
