NDA Medical Test for Girls
NDA Girls’ Medical Test: All the Facts in One Place
The NDA Girls’ Medical Test is what every female candidate has to go through after clearing the NDA written exam and SSB interview for the National Defence Academy. It is to make sure you are in the best of health and mind for the training.
The test includes eye and hearing health, dental health, height and weight ratios, blood and urine tests, heart and lung function, and it looks at what diseases or injuries may affect duty performance. They also look at gynaecological health.
Doctors follow official armed forces guidelines, so nothing is random. If they find a small health issue, you’ll have time to get it treated. Knowing what tests are done helps you prepare early, stay relaxed, and go through the process with confidence.
Why Medical Tests Matter in NDA
The military requires individuals who are not only quick-minded but also in great health to perform in difficult situations, which may include extreme weather, long hours, or intense physical activity. That’s why the health standards are high.
The criteria of medical tests for girls are almost the same as compared for boys, with some differences to account for biological variations. The aim is simple: to make sure you are capable of handling military training without risking your health or safety.
When and Where the Medical Happens
Once you pass the SSB interview, you will go to a Service Selection Board, which includes a medical board that is held in some of the AFMS hospitals.
Common venues:
Location | Hospital |
Pune | Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) |
Delhi Cantt | Base Hospital |
Lucknow / Kolkata / Bengaluru | Command Hospitals |
Duration: The medicals usually take 3-5 days, depending on how many of candidates are there and whether any specialist reviews are needed.
Documents You will Need
Before we jump into the actual tests, make sure you have these ready:
- Call letter for medicals
- 10th and 12th mark sheets (proof of age)
- Identity proof (such as Aadhaar card, PAN card, Passport, etc.)
- Any previous medical records
- Glasses, which you may require if you have a prescription.
- For girls, menstrual history may be asked during a gynaecological examination
The Medical Tests – Step by Step
Here’s what happens during the NDA girls’ medical examination:
1. General Physical Examination
- Height & Weight: The Minimum height for girls is 152 cm. Weight has to be in proportion to your height according to the NDA medical standards chart.
- Body Mass Index (BMI): Should be within the healthy range.
- Posture & Gait: Doctors check for scoliosis (spinal curvature) and knock knees, in also report flat feet and any other deformities.
- Skin Check: They identify cases of eczema, psoriasis, or severe acne, which in turn include issues with the wear of equipment/helmets.
2. Vision & Eye Tests
Good vision is critical in the forces.
- Distant Vision: One eye should see perfectly (6/6), and the other should be at least 6/9, but it should become 6/6 if you wear glasses.
- Near Vision: N6/N9 standard.
- Tests for colour blindness and night blindness.
- Eye muscle balance is checked to ensure there is no squint.
Tip: If you use spectacles, keep your prescription updated. LASIK is allowed under certain conditions, but only after a minimum healing period and within specific age ranges.
3. Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) Examination
During the check-up, they will check your ear problem, don’t have any sinus issues, have healthy eardrums, and can breathe easily through your nose.
4. Dental Check
Yes, your teeth matter. Healthy gums and a good number of sound teeth are essential. You should have at least 14 dental points (a way doctors count usable teeth). Severe cavities or misalignment might need fixing.
5. Chest & Lungs Examination
Using a stethoscope and chest X-ray, they ensure:
- No record of asthma (unless mild and childhood-limited)
- No tuberculosis
- Proper lung capacity
6. Heart Examination
They will check:
- Heart sounds (using a stethoscope)
- ECG if needed
- No congenital heart disease
7. Abdomen Check
Doctors check for:
- Enlarged liver/spleen
- Any surgical scars
- Hernia
8. Gynaecological Examination (For Girls Only)
This is where female candidates often have the most questions.
A lady doctor will check:
- General reproductive health
- Some serious gynaecological issues, like large ovarian cysts or severe endometriosis.
- Menstrual history (what is noted is that irregular periods usually are not an issue unless they are a sign of something larger).
Tip: If you have any issues with your gynaecologist, get them checked out before your medical exams to avoid surprises.
9. Urine & Blood Tests
These are standard to:
- Rule out diabetes
- Check kidney function
- Check for infections or anaemia
10. Musculoskeletal Examination
Doctors assess:
- Joint stability (knees, ankles, shoulders)
- Muscle strength
- Spinal flexibility
Conditions like severe flat feet, knock knees, or limited joint mobility can lead to rejection.
11. Other Specialist Reviews
If they notice anything unusual, you may be referred to a specialist for a Review Medical Board (RMB). This doesn’t mean automatic rejection; it’s just to confirm if you meet standards.
Common Reasons Girls Get Declared Temporarily or Permanently Unfit
Temporary Unfit (TU) means you can get re-examined after treatment:
- Anaemia (low haemoglobin)
- Over/underweight beyond limits
- Skin infections
- Ear or dental issues
- Minor injuries
Permanent Unfit (PU) means you cannot join unless you appeal and pass in an Appeal Medical Board:
- Severe scoliosis or kyphosis (spinal deformity)
- Color blindness
- Significant heart disease
- Chronic asthma
- Major gynaecological disorders
How to Prepare Before Your NDA Medicals
Here’s what you can do months in advance:
- Maintain a Healthy Weight: Candidate should have a healthy weight.
- Boost Haemoglobin: Eat healthy food, spinach, jaggery, beetroot, pulses, etc.
- Dental Hygiene: Get your cavities looked at and alignment checked.
- Vision Check: Update your prescription if you wear glasses.
- Stay Injury-Free: Avoid risky sports if your medical date is near.
- Treat Skin Problems: Severe cases of acne should be treated.
What Happens if You are Declared Unfit?
Don’t panic!
- If temporarily unfit, you will get a period (often 42 days) to recover and appear again.
- If permanently unfit, you can apply for an Appeal Medical Board within a fixed timeline. Sometimes, initial decisions get reversed after a re-check.
Final Tips for the Day of Medicals
- Sleep well before the medical examination.
- Eat a healthy breakfast.
- Wear comfortable clothes.
- Be honest about your medical history; hiding issues can cause bigger trouble later.
- Carry a water bottle and light snacks with you; the process can be long.
Conclusion
The NDA medical for girls is a process which is not to be feared; it is there to see if you are fit for the tough yet exciting role in the armed forces. The goal isn’t to reject you, but to make sure your health will be in good hands through intense training and service.
Think of the medical board as your first well-wishers in uniform, ensuring you are ready for the road ahead. If you are to take charge of your health now, eat right, live actively, and attend to those minor health issues, you will go into that medical board with confidence. Also, what you do today in terms of preparation will remove tomorrow’s stress.
