Who Can Join NDA? Eligibility, Age, and Exam Details Simplified

When we mention the NDA (National Defence Academy), we must realise that this isn’t merely another exam; it’s a dream for several youngsters looking to join the armed forces and serve the country with dignity.

However, the first question every aspirant thinks of is, “Is he eligible for NDA?” If you are thinking this yourself, don’t worry. Let’s make it as simple as possible.

What is an NDA?

The NDA written exam is held by UPSC twice every year. If you clear both the written exam and the SSB interview, you get the chance to join the National Defence Academy (NDA). It’s a place where future officers of the Army, Navy, and Air Force train together. After NDA, cadets move on to their respective academies for specialised training – IMA for the Army, INA for the Navy, and AFA for the Air Force.

Who Can Apply for NDA? (Eligibility Criteria)

Nationality

  • You must be an Indian citizen.
  • Citizens of Nepal and persons of Indian origin who migrated from certain countries can also apply (with proper documents).

Gender

  • Both males and females can apply for the NDA exam.
  • Initially, only boys were eligible, but effective from 2021, girls can now apply.
  • Educational Qualification

Educational Qualification

  • For Army Wing: You should have passed Class 12 (or be appearing in it). Any stream is fine- Science, Commerce, or Arts.
  • For Air Force and Naval Wings + Naval Academy: You must have passed (or be appearing in) Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics.
  • So, if you are aiming for the Air Force or Navy, Maths and Science are compulsory.

Age Limit for NDA

Age can often be tricky for candidates, so let’s make it simple:

  • You should be over 16.5 years and under 19.5 years.
  • This means you can apply after Class 12, but not once you have crossed the 19-year age mark.
  • For example, if you are applying for NDA-1 2026, you should have a birthdate that is approximately July 2007 to July 2010 (exact dates are mentioned in the notification).

No age relaxation is provided for any category.

Physical Standards

Since NDA is about preparing future officers, physical fitness is important. Some basic requirements are:

  • Height: At least 157 cm (for the Army). For the Air Force, it’s slightly different.
  • Weight: Should be proportionate to height and age.
  • Vision: 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other (with or without glasses, depending on the role).
  • You must be free from diseases, major health issues, or physical disabilities.

  • After the written exam, shortlisted candidates appear for the SSB Interview (worth 900 marks).

How Many Times Can You Attempt NDA?

Good news, there’s no limit on the number of attempts.

As long as you’re within the age bracket (15.5–18.5), you can apply every time NDA is conducted (twice a year).
