Here, “gainfully employed” means that you must be getting continuous work and a salary from the employer. In simple words, a gainfully employed person means a person employed or self-employed in any business, trade, or profession for income or profit.

Furthermore, someone who is a serving member of the Regular Army/Navy/Air Force/Police/General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF)/Para Military and other such forces is not eligible to join the Territorial Army.

Territorial Army Application Process

The Territorial Army application process is completely online and there is no other mode for submitting the application. Candidates can apply through the official website of the Territorial Army (http://www.jointerrtorialarmy.gov.in/) from 23rd October 2023 to 21st November 2023. Candidates should also note that an application fee of Rs. 500 is also to be paid while filling out the online application form. There are 18 vacancies for males and one vacancy for females as per the official notification for Territorial Army recruitment 2023. Further, candidates should be very careful while filling out the online application form. They should provide only valid and active email IDs and mobile numbers. Also, the details should be correct and authentic to avoid any discrepancies. 

Territorial Army Exam Date

As per the official notification by the Territorial Army, there will be an online entrance exam which will take place during the 3rd/4th week of December 2023. You will get primary details about your online exam center through the admit card.

Territorial Army Syllabus and Exam Pattern

The Territorial Army syllabus covers four subjects; Reasoning, Elementary Mathematics, General Knowledge, and English. For more information, you can check the syllabus and exam pattern of the Territorial Army as given below.

  • Reasoning: Among the four subjects in the syllabus of the Territorial Army exam, reasoning is an important subject and it consists of 25 questions. Certain topics that are covered in reasoning are forming a logical conclusion based on the simple pattern of numbers, letters, statements, figures, and sequence making as may be expected of a rational thinking person without any special study of the subject.
  • Elementary Mathematics: Similar to reasoning, the elementary mathematics subject also contains 25 questions. It consists of topics like Arithmetic, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Mensuration, and Statistics. The main sub-topics include number system, percentage, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, LCM and HCF, simple trigonometric identities, height and distance, square, rectangle, parallelogram, triangle, circle, collection and tabulation of statistical data, graphical representation and measure of central tendency, etc.
  • General Knowledge: Among others, General Knowledge is an important part of the Territorial Army syllabus. It covers questions from topics like current affairs and ordinary scientific observations and experiences. Additionally, there will be questions about the History and Geography of India. In short, it also covers a total of 25 questions carrying equal marks.
  • English: In the English subject of the Territorial Army syllabus, the topics are testing the candidates’ understanding of English and workman-like use of words. Furthermore, questions from this subject may also include synonyms, antonyms, reading comprehension, para jumbles, spotting errors, jumbled sentences, and fill-in-the-blanks.

The questions from the Elementary Mathematics subject will be of matriculation level. On the other hand, the standard of questions in other subjects will be of a graduate level. Also, there is a provision of negative marking in the online entrance exam for the recruitment of Territorial Army officers. For every incorrect answer, one-third of the marks assigned to that particular question will be deducted as part of a negative marking.

Territorial Army Selection Process

The Territorial Army selection process includes an online written exam, an interview by the Services Selection Board (SSB), and a medical examination. 

  • The first stage involves shortlisting candidates for the written exam.
  • Now, the shortlisted candidates are required to score the minimum qualifying marks.
  • Finally, those who clear the written exam are called for the SSB interview.
  • Those candidates who get a recommendation from SSB undergo a medical examination.
  • Lastly, the final merit list is prepared based on the marks scored in the online entrance exam and the SSB interview.

After the declaration of the final merit list, the selected candidates will get six months of pre-commission training and then only then will be commissioned in the Territorial Army. Also, a two-month annual training camp is organized every year for the commissioned officers.

Territorial Army Service Terms and Conditions

  • First of all, one should understand that the Territorial Army does not offer full-time careers rather it provides part-time roles.
  • As per the terms and conditions of service, a Territorial Army officer has to mandatorily receive two months of training in a year.
  • You will join in the rank of Lieutenant and the pay and allowances are the same as for regular army officers. However, there is no concept of pension in the case of Territorial Army officers.
